Trenchless methods
Trenchless sewer repair in Denver
Trenchless means the sewer line is fixed from inside, through a cleanout or one small pit, instead of being dug out along its length. For a lateral in Denver that runs under a lawn, an alley apron and a public street, that distinction is the difference between a one-day repair and a week of excavation and pavement restoration. This page explains how the right trenchless method is picked.

What the camera has to answer
Choosing a trenchless method for a lateral in Denver comes down to four questions, and all of them are answered by the inspection video. What is the pipe made of, section by section? How much of its original round shape and its downhill grade has it kept? Is there a single defect or a line of them? And is the pipe big enough for what the building sends down it today? A pre-war clay lateral under Washington Park usually scores well on shape and badly on joints. Orangeburg under a 1955 ranch in southeast Denver scores badly on shape, which rules out lining the worst stretches. Cast iron under a slab has usually kept its shape while losing its floor. Each profile points to a different tool.
The three tools
Cured-in-place lining pulls or inverts a resin-filled sleeve through the existing pipe and hardens it against the wall with heat or UV light, which leaves a smooth jointless pipe inside the old one. It is the answer for roots, cracks, open joints and rusted inverts in a host that is still round. Pipe bursting replaces the pipe outright: a bursting head is winched through from a pit near the main, splitting the old pipe outward, while new polyethylene is towed in behind it. It is the answer for collapses, crushed and flattened sections, and lines that need to go from four inches to six. Sectional point repair cures a short liner over one defect and leaves the rest of the line untouched, which is the answer when the video shows one bad joint in sixty feet of good pipe. Each is described in depth on its own page, and all three are compared without sales language at the CIPP reference.
Why the alley matters in Denver
The older Denver grid runs its mains down the alleys as often as down the streets, and the lateral leaves the back of the house, crosses the yard, passes under the garage apron and ties into the alley main. Digging that path means losing the garage access, blocking the alley for the neighbors and trash service, and pulling a right-of-way permit for the open cut and its restoration. In the newer districts the main is in the street, and the open cut means asphalt, traffic control and a city inspector. Trenchless methods leave both corridors intact. The city still requires its Sewer Use and Drainage Permit for the lateral itself, but the right-of-way side of the paperwork shrinks to a parking space for the truck.
Where a dig is still honest
Trenchless is not a slogan, and there are situations where the right answer includes a shovel. A belly deep enough to hold standing water will still hold water after it is lined, because the liner follows the host. The tap at the main sometimes fails in a way that must be rebuilt by hand. A pipe crushed flat right at the foundation wall may be easier to replace for three feet than to burst for sixty. The honest proposal combines a small, targeted excavation with a liner over the rest of the run, and prices both so the owner sees why. An installer who never recommends a dig is as suspect as one who always does.
Weather, soil and timing
Denver laterals sit below the frost line, and liners cure on heat, so the work goes on through winter. The expansive clay that worked the joints open over decades is also the reason a jointless replacement holds up: there is no longer a seam for the soil to pry at. Summer cloudbursts raise the groundwater and flow in the combined sewers of central Denver for a few hours at a time, and a crew will simply schedule the cure around a forecast rather than fight it. Most single-family jobs are completed in one working day in any month.
The installer and the record
the verified installer covering Denver runs the inspection, recommends the method from the video, files the permits and delivers a post-repair recording with the warranty. Verification under the standard at the verified installer directory means the materials, the training and the inspection practice have been checked, which is the assurance a buyer's inspector or a city reviewer looks for in the house file.

Questions we hear about trenchless sewer repair
Is every sewer line in Denver a candidate for trenchless repair?+
Nearly every one, but not always for the same method. A line with cracks, roots and open joints that has kept its shape is lined; a line that has collapsed or flattened is burst; a single defect in a sound run gets a point repair. The rare exception is a deep sag holding standing water, which no in-pipe method can lift, so that short section is dug and regraded while the rest is lined.
How much of the yard gets disturbed?+
For lining and point repair, typically nothing beyond the cleanout, and if no cleanout exists, one small pit to install one. Bursting needs a second pit near the main, a few feet square, often at the alley property line. Sod comes up over the pit and goes back the same day. Driveways, patios and the street are not opened.
What does a trenchless repair cost compared with digging?+
Per foot of pipe, a liner is often comparable to a trench on an open lawn and far less expensive than a trench through a driveway, an alley or a city street, where the pavement restoration, traffic control and right-of-way bond add up fast. In Denver the owner is responsible for the lateral out to the main, so the stretch under pavement is included in both quotes, and that is usually where the trenchless number wins.
How long does the repair last?+
Cured-in-place liners and polyethylene replacement pipe are both designed for a service life of fifty years and carry written warranties from the installer. The finished pipe has no joints, which removes the entry point that clay laterals in Denver have been offering roots since the 1920s.
